## Introduction:

When we perform operations of addition and subtractions on whole numbers we follow the rule of writing them in a particular order and then perform the operation. Similarly when we do the multiplication and division, we use the multiplication tables we have learnt and solve the problems. Our everyday life is full of mathematical operations. Let us discuss few of the math division problems in this section.## Word Problems - Division:

#### Example 1: In a parade, the soldiers are arranged in 15 rows. If the number of soldiers is 210, find the number of soldiers in each row.

**Solution:**

Number of rows = 15

Number of soldiers arranged in 15 rows = 210

Number of soldiers arranged in 1 row = $\frac{210}{15}$

=

**14**

**There are 14 soldiers in each row.**

#### Example 2: Find the least number that should be added to 1500 so that 35 divides the sum exactly.

**Solution:**

Let us divide 1500 by 35

42

**Working:**35 x 1 = 35

_____________ 35 x 2 = 70

35 | 1500 35 x 3 = 105

(-) 140 35 x 4 = 140

______

100

(-) 70

______

30

_____

We observe that the remainder is 30.

since the divisor is 35, we get 35 - 30 = 5

so 5 must be added to 1500 so that the resulting sum is divided by 35 exactly.

The sum = 1500 + 5 =

**1505**

**Verification:**

43

________________

35 | 1505

(-) 140

______

105

(-) 105

______

0

______

**Therefore, the least number is 5, so that 1500 + 5 = 1505 is divided by 35 exactly.**

#### Example 3: The cost of 15 note books is $\$$ 180. Find the cost of 1 note book. Hence find the cost of 9 note books.

**Solution:**

The cost of 15 note books = $\$$ 180

Cost of 1 note book = $\frac{180}{15}$

= $\$$ 12

Cost of 9 note books = 12 x 9

= $\$$ **108 **

**Therefore the cost of 9 note books = $\$$ 108**

## Practice Questions:

2. A machine prints 1500 newspapers in 45 minutes. How many does it produce in 1 minute. Also find how many does it produce in 2 hours.
